Not in your house but in your computer! While hunting for my install of Geometer’s Sketchpad, I found the folder Lx_cats in C:\Program Files. I was automatically suspicious of this file as I didn’t recall installing anything by that name. So I opened up the lxdjCATS.ini file there and looked at it. I noticed that it had an ominous entry: UploadURL=https://www.lxkcc1.com. I immediately tossed that URL in Google and found a number of hits regarding it. Here’s the top hit. Long story short, the nifty wireless printer I bought from Lexmark installs software along with it that periodically dials home to Lexmark and hands over usage reports along with my printer’s serial number. It’s apparently old news but Lexmark is still up to their old tricks. It’s been 3 1/2 years since it was first reported on Slashdot and they’re still up to it. I remember distinctly having reservations when I purchased the printer given Lexmark’s reputation online but I swallowed them down and overrode my concerns with the price and utility of having a wireless printer. I leave you to decide what the moral of the story is. Also: if you have a Lexmark, go delete that Lx_cats crap.
